We know that English language has always been incorporating words from other languages. The words in English are taken from German (eg. blitzkrieg, poltergeist, zeitgeist, hamburger, gesundheit, doppelganger and kindergarten) , Russian ( babushka, pogrom, cosmonaut, bolshevik, taiga, glasnost, perestroika , czar, vodka) , Spanish ( adios, albatross, banana, mosquito, papaya etc), French (a la carte, a la mode, adieu, avant garde, bon voyage, bureau, cafe, chauffeur, deja vu, entrepreneur, gaffe, hors d'oevur, lassez faire, montage, noveaue, renaissance, tableau etc) , Italian (intaglio, influenza, macaroni, spaghetti, studio, tempo, pizza, paparazzi etc) , Hindustani ( ghat, bazaar, avatar, bungalow, cheetah, curry, guru, juggernaut, jungle, thug, pyjamas, raita, shawl, shampoo, typhoon, sorbet(sharbat), verandah etc) among other languages.

At the same time, Hindi also does not have a vocabulary of its own has historically taken loanwords from languages like Persian( hargiz, hamesha, rang, imandar etc.), Chinese (chai, paneer), Arabic(wakeel), Turkish(top), French(kartoos) etc. In fact the very word Hindi is from Persian for the area around Indus (Sindhu) so it defies logic why they are currently refusing foreign words from languages like English. I believe that such words which are cumbersome and never used are simply a waste and symbolic of ego of some people. I believe that using loanwords would enhance the language, and not undermine it.

India recently put up its best show at the Olympics, winning total of 6 medals including 2 silver. This show came on the heels of strong showings in the Delhi Common Wealth Games 2010 and the Guangzhou Asian Games 2011. No doubt the showing by the athletes is commendable, but do we think that it is a big achievement that we still crave for a single gold medal even though we are the second populous country in the world?

For long we have taken pride in being the world champions in hockey and boast of players of the caliber of the hockey wizard, Major Dhyan Chand. The Major had such mastery over the ball that in Berlin, 1936 the officials broke his stick to check for magnets. No one could comprehend his level of skill. India's record of retaining the hockey gold for 24 years is still unbroken. Yet, if you took at the medal tally it would say one medal. For about 60 years India's best showing was 1 gold+1 bronze by Kasaba Jadhav, which was bettered in 2008 Beijing games. For 3 consecutive games from Atlanta 1996 to Athens 2004 we gloated over a solitary medal for our showing, either silver or bronze. Certain countries like North Korea would wonder what we are celebrating so much when small countries like them can win 3-4 gold medals at one games.

Many of us would feel that given our manpower, we should do better and win 3-4 gold medals at least, if not 30-40 which USA/China consider as regular. And this "many" would include a considerable number of foreigners also. We did win 3 medals at Beijing, now doubled that at London and we aim for 10 medals at Rio, which is a distinct possibility also. The current generation of winners should inspire the next generations and we should produce more and more winners over the decades. That sounds good on hearing, but we also need a reality check. Fact is, we can become a sporting superpower but the way things are now, I do not see it happening.

Everyone wants to get his share of publicity by giving big rewards to the winners. When the river is flowing, wash your hands in it. When the people are overjoyed, spend a little and come in the news for it. Fact is, the facilities at the grass root and the system remains the same as before. Sushil Kumar still has to train in a ghetto sort of room with 8-10 wrestlers in one room with just one fan for his stay.

So whats it like in the current sporting superpowers? Lets take a brief look. Firstly, we consider USA. In USA the grades of every students are tied to excellence is sports, and you are free to choose the sport of your choice. So the schools as well as parents are bound to provide facilities for sports. As a result, by the time you pass out of school, most of the students play at least two games at a competitive level. In contrast, 90% of us Indians are not even aware of most of the games, let alone know how to play it. For instance, you did not even know what "double trap shooting" is before Colonel Rajya Vardhan Singh Rathore won that silver at Athens, perhaps you still dont know but do understand its a shooting event. So how do we excel at sports when we have never even played the sport in our life? Olympic sports like boxing and wrestling still remain the poor man's sports as there is virtually no glamour or career scope perceived by the middle or upper class. People take up sports to serve as a means for landing a government job, or some seat in govt college in sports quota.

As for China, they are a classic example of what a communist nation can achieve. Everything is provided by the state, and the individuals work for the state. China did not participate in the Olympics till they deemed themselves worthy of winning. They first participated in the games in 1952(only in one event) and then were a regular from 1984 when they won their first gold medal. China has taken a strategic approach to maximizing the number of medals. In the Olympics, maximum number of medals can be won in individual events. Like in athletics, one person can participate in multiple events like Michael Phelps participates in races of varying lengths, and also in the relay race. Whereas in team events, about a dozen people combine to win a solitary medal at best. This also reflects in China's showing where they dominate the individual events but come a cropper in the team events like football and hockey. Either they don't participate, or participate and come last in such events. Having said that, they have pumped billions of dollars in their sports like table tennis, badminton etc where their level of domination is beyond belief. Like in table tennis, they sweep all medals across the disciplines like singles and doubles. But their domination does not end there. A majority of the players representing the rest of the countries are also from Chinese origin ! They took to playing for other countries since the competition is too tough in China. China provides top class facilities to its players even at the grass root level.

If we contrast that with India, we would find that for a long period we were dominant in only hockey. So, no matter how good we were, we would get only one medal, and nothing was done about the other sports. Now, there is some shift in this scenario and we are now producing more competitive players in individual areas and at the same time we are flopping in hockey. So the number of medals is expected to go up only. Although, the facilities that our players get cannot begin to compare with the facilities and system in China.

The third place in the London Olympics went to hosts England, and we were a hard to notice #55. Its true that they would have got certain decisions in their favour, but we fail to notice their preparation expenses were also 10 times more than us. We were supposed to be a superpower in archery, boasting of the likes of Deepika Kumari who is the world number 1. But everyone flopped and lost in the first round, including Deepika. Stats show that England, which is not even a known superpower in archery, had spent more than 4 times the amount we spent on archery. The way our archers displayed nerves it is evident that they need a psychologist, though the windy conditions in England also created problems, and England did have the home advantage.

So how do we approach the olympics and what can we hope to achieve? We are not physically very strong but we are good in sports that require skill. So we can do well in sports like shooting, badminton, wrestling, archery, boxing etc but we would struggle to make a mark in athletics I believe. We can target such sports initially and make them our string point for the times to come. Our current contingents become nervous when it comes to the crunch so we lack mental toughness which should be ingrained. If we give top class training facility and equipment to our players and they display tough character and temperament we should be good enough for 2-3 gold medals with our current contingents, which should be a realistic target. If we want to become a superpower, it wont happen until sports are embraced at school level and we target sports like we targeted literacy at one point.

These cities had the best drain system in the world and so there was no brain drain from them Ancient India was full of myths which have been handed down from son to father. A myth is a female moth. A collection of myths is called mythology, which means stories with female caricatures. One myth says that people in olden times worshipped monkeys because they were our incestors.

In olden times there were two big families in India. One was called the Pandava and the other was called the Karova. They fought amongst themselves in a battle called Mahabharat, after which India came to be known as MeraBharat Mahan.

In midevil times India was ruled by the Slave Dienasty. So named because they all died a nasty death. Then came the Tughlaqs who shifted their capital from Delhi because of its pollution. They were followed by the Mowglis. The greatest Mowgli was Akbar because he extinguished himself on the battlefield of Panipat which is in Hurryana. But his son Jehangir was peace loving; he married one Hindu wife and kept 300 porcupines. Then came Shahajahan who had 14 sons. Family planning had not been invented at that time. He also built the Taj Mahal hotel for his wife who now sleeps there. The king sent all his sons away to distant parts of India because they started quarrelling. Dara Seiko was sent to UP, Shaikh Bhakhtiyar was sent to J & K, while Orangezip came to Bombay to fight Shivaji. However, after that they changed its name to Mumbai because Shivaji's sena did not like it. They also do not like New Delhi, so they are calling it Door Darshan.

After the Mowglis came Vasco the Gama. He was an exploder who was circumcising India with a 100 foot clipper. Then came the British. They brought with them many inventions such as cricket, tramtarts and steamed railways. They were followed by the French who brought in French fries, pizzazz and laundry. But Robert Clive drove them out when he deafened Duplex who was out membered since the British had the queen on their side.

Eventually, the British came to overrule India because there was too much diversity in our unity. The British overruled India for a long period. They were great expotents and impotents. They started expoting salt from India and impoting cloth. This was not liked by Mahatma Gandhi who wanted to produce his own salt. This was called the Swedish moment. During this moment, many people burnt their lion cloths in the street and refused to wear anything else. The British became very angry at this and stopped the production of Indian testiles.

In 1920, Mahatma Gandhi was married to one wife. Soon after he became the father of the nation. In 1942 he started the Quiet India moment, so named because the British were quietly lootoing our country. In 1947, India became free and its people became freely loving. This increased our population. Its government became a limited mockery, which means people are allowed to take the law in their own hands with the help of the police. Our constipation is the best in the world because it says that no man can be hanged twice for the same crime. It also says you cannot be put in prison if you have not paid your taxis. Another important thing about our constipation is that it can be changed. This is not possible with the British constipation because it is not written on paper. The Indian parlemint consists of two houses which are called lower and higher. This is because one Mr Honest Abe said that two houses divided against itself cannot withstand. So Pandit Nehru asked the British for freedom at midnight since the British were afraid of the dark. At midnight, on August 15, there was a tryst in parlemint in which many participated by wearing khaki and hosting the flag. Recently in India, there have been a large number of scams and a plaque,it can be dangerous because many people died of this plaque in Surat. Scams are all over India. One of these was in Bihar where holy cows were not given anything to eat by their elected leader. The other scam was in Bofor which is a small town in Switzerland. In this, a lot of Indian money was given to buy a gun which can shoot a coot.

Presently India has a coalishun government made up of many parties, left, right and centre. It has started to library the economy. This means that there is now no need for a licence as the economy will be driven by itself.

India is also trying to become an Asian tiger because its own tigers are being poached. Another important event this year was the Shark meeting at Malas Dive. At this place, shark leaders agreed to share their poverty, pollution and population.

Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-48527023491906608662011-05-25T16:49:00.001-07:002011-05-25T17:11:15.462-07:00English quotes and their translation"When you really desire something from the heart and soul, all the universe conspires you to achieve it"
-Paulo Coelho, the Alchemist
Translation:
"kisi cheez ko agar dil se chaho, to poori kaynat use tum se milane me lag jati hai"
-Shah Rukh Khan, Om Shanti Om

"The woods are lovely dark and deep
but I have promises to keep
and miles to go before I sleep"
-Robert Frost, Stopping by woods on a snowy evening
Translation:
"Raat ke andhere me kami nahi ayi
door hai wo manzil abhi nahi ayi"
-Naseeruddin ShahKulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-42694779386950506582011-03-28T02:40:00.000-07:002011-03-28T02:49:05.295-07:00Introduction to programming answers
These are some of the answers given in the sheet of of a student. As a child we are crammed with the high moral values, truth ala Harischandra, and whenever we commit a little mistake we are liable to be bombarded with chiding and subjected to the long unending lectures by our parents or teachers as to what is right and what is wrong. As a result, our world is painted in black and white and we come to accept that certain people or governments are right, or white; and certain individuals or groups are black, or wrong. But as we grow and get different views of the world we live in, we see that whatever is told to us is laced with half truths, even lies, and there is no such thing as "white" or "black", just shades of "grey" which keep swinging between the lighter and the darker side of the spectrum with passage of time. As a child, I used to think that my teachers in school know EVERYTHING, probably because my knowledge was zilch as compared to theirs, but now I understand that there is no such thing as perfect knowledge, those who say otherwise are just pretentious.

We live in a world where we have to accept what is told to us by the people at high positions, be it our boss or be it our governments, and by default the world accepts that whoever is at the high pedestal is correct, especially if the information is incomplete then the one at higher authority is assumed to be correct. to quote a dictum: "THE BOSS IS ALWAYS RIGHT". Now if your interviewer says your interview wasn't good so you are being given lower pay or if your boss says your performance isn't good so you are not being given increment, then what conclusion can we draw from such a statement? We have to consider the fact that the boss is also human and he is definitely not above the rest of humanity simply because he is at a high pedestal before we blindly accept what has been told. We live in a world of half truths, and the occasional lie in between a story is the norm which is told to uphold the interest of the story teller. Can we really fall back and assume whatever is being told to us is the fact, where by "fact" I mean something which is still undistorted by the personal interests of the teller.

Even the children's stories as we read and know them today are essentially half truths, as less than half the story is told to us in the books that we read. It is a fact that the fairy tales as we read them today have been made softer, sweeter and primly moral with the passage of time. The original stories by the brothers Grimm and the others were full of gore, blood, murder, sex and even incest and would be too grisly for today's audiences. In one of the earlier versions of the little red riding hood, the wolf has sex with her , eats her and the story ends there. In the story of Hansel and Grethel, the two siblings make their escape by slashing the throat of the witch. In the story of Cinderella, the step sisters cut off parts of their feet to make the shoe fit for them. The prince comes to know of this trickery from pigeons who pluck out the eyes of the sisters.

All being said so far being just food for thought, and maybe my personal opinion alone till about a week back, but now probably we have some concrete support of my theory in the form of the Wikileaks expose. Wikileaks is a supposedly non profit organization which claims to have a database running into millions of leaked documents, and intended to provide a platform to journalists who otherwise cannot reveal some of the sensitive information they obtain, and can evade the repercussions, like what happened with a Chinese journalist who was jailed for publicizing some email relating to the anniversary of Tiananmen square massacre.

While all is known about regimes like the US government acting like a big brother and almost wanting the subject to do what the government wants, and not what the subject wants, but the latest revelations from Wikileaks put US on the same "freedom to speech" pedestal as maybe China or UAE. Wikileaks is releasing a quantum of 'secret' and 'classified' information in stages. The documents date back to 1966 and contain the orders sent to different countries, and the embassy reporting from the country. Hence they have the details of US activity in every country. All of this is that sort of information which can cause some sort of repercussions when is released, and the standard way of dealing with such information is to keep it from the general public. Once again, politically sensitive information is screened and we get a goody-goody version of the incident to suit the purposes of the big brother, which is laced with the half truths, the omitted truths and the in between lies. In other words, the high father paints himself in white, classifying any information that can potentially cause damage or disrepute as "CLASSIFIED". HOW CONVENIENT!!

Are you so sure that whatever information the regime is shelling out is in its original untainted state, and that its the truth in its entirety? What is right and what is wrong? Are our notions of justice been defined by those at the high altars of justice? Has that not always been the case, the only difference over the ages has probably been that earlier in the case of monarchy, the subjects never had a choice as per the rules. So the rulers made whatever arbitrary choices that came to them and imposed them on the society, and more often than not, over a period of time, the society came to accept the whims of any such person as being the "right" thing because "that's the way things are done." And these days, we have something called a "democracy", and once again, whatever those at the position of power say, is correct. After all, the boss is always right.

In the ancient ages of Alexander, the Mughals, the Roman Empire and all, there were wars every now and then. It is my personal opinion that most often both the sides fought for what was their definition of justice, personal riches, power and glory apart. Needless to say, this was not the case for ALL such battles. The attackers had a view of expanding their reign and power, and hence their justice. Aurangzeb had his view of converting the entire nation into Mohammedans, by whatever means. He was probably looking at the reflection of the prophet's ideals in a cracked mirror. I believe that most of the defending rulers and princes were largely concerned about their own wealth and power being snatched away, rather than the well being of the masses. As was the case during colonial expansion, the Europeans always justified their conquer of the African and Asian countries with the mission of "educating" the native pagan tribes, even though many missionaries themselves did not support colonization. Today we glorify the protagonists of the 1857 war, and glorify it as the "first war of independence", but the ruling East India company termed the fighters as delinquents or rebels , and the war was termed a rebellion by them. Interestingly, the brutal suppression of the revolt and perhaps an even more brutal follow up in which innocent civilians were mass murdered was justified by the then British masses back in England. Bhagat Singh was a "terrorist" as per the British. Also, what we always miss in the picture is the fact that most of the people who took part in that war were fighting because they saw their power being threatened, and not out of love of the masses. Who are we to say that the British were "better" or "worse" than the monarchs who preceded them, when we know nothing of the rulers who were there before the British came? Though it is accepted that we have progressed a lot since they left us to have our own rule, but again the concept of right or wrong is contingent upon who is in power.

Coming back to the wars of ancient times, both the sides fighting in the war had their own sense of justice, everyone would paint themselves as white and the other side as black. In wars, no matter who won, justice always triumphed because whoever won, BECAME justice.

Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-11028395866122466642010-09-14T21:51:00.000-07:002010-09-14T22:12:04.099-07:00Rajni the immortal
Rajni Kanth's CV lists his top 50 achievements as follows:

1)Rajnikanth makes onions cry
2)Rajnikanth can delete the Recycle Bin.
3)Ghosts are actually caused by Rajnikanth killing people faster than Death can process them.
4)Rajnikanth can build a snowman..... out of rain.
5)Rajnikanth can strangle you with a cordless phone.
6)Rajnikanth can drown a fish.
7)When Rajnikanth enters a room, he doesn't turn the lights on, he turns the dark off.
8)When Rajnikanth looks in a mirror the mirror shatters, because not even glass is stupid enough to get in between Rajnikanth and Rajnikanth.
9)Brett Favre can throw a football over 50 yards. While these may be dismissed as mere speculations by some without any foundation, these definitely warrant a second thought with a rational and logical bent of mind. This one would undoubtedly fall into the latter category.

This may come as a surprise to some who have been following global warming , or rather the protocols or meetings that are being held on regular basis, and there is this buzz regarding the topic, and the ice age issue is virtually non-existent. The explanation for this hype regarding the current issue of global warming is that we need a suitable culprit to frame, and in this case it is the greenhouse gas emissions by factories , automobiles etc. which are all a by product of our civilization, and we forget that mother nature always keeps moving along at its own pace, and accordingly climate changes follow. The basic tenet of nature that we tend to forget is: IT'S A CYCLE! Every beginning begets an end, the end is just a means to a new beginning. If the dinosaurs had not gone extinct, the rule of mammals and later on, homo sapiens , would never have come to pass. Just about everything in the cosmos follows this basic rule of cycles: rotation of planets- day comes after night, revolution in their orbits, path of comets, life and death, and the list goes on. Anything that begins, would have an end, and any end is a means to a new beginning. Some of the lesser known natural cycles are the sunspot cycle, the magnetic pole reversal, and the ice age. All occur with a certain degree of regularity, though the time period is not always exactly the same because of some variations like wobble or some other phenomena, but it is approximately the same. The pole reversal and the ice age are two cycles whose time is high overdue and can occur anytime. As a matter of fact, the earth hasn't been this warm in ages, and its only a matter of time before things start moving the other way.

Firstly, the pole reversal is a phenomenon of which many people might never have heard of. It occurs once every 50,000 years or so and the effects can be devastating for life on the planet. For one , migratory birds would lose all sense of direction. The full effects of such a change are not fully understood but it is well understood that the magnetic north, which people use for navigation purposes is slightly different from the geographic north where James Cook first reached in 1834. You may say that now we have GPS and all but the fact is, compasses are still used to find the direction in underground or underwater regions where the satellite signal cannot reach. As of the recent records, the Magnetic North was very close to the geographic North though slightly different. In 1904, it started moving at about 5 miles an year. Currently, its near some island in Canada and moving rapidly at about 35 miles an year towards Siberia. Is this an auger? Does this ring a bell? Can it be the harbinger of some catastrophic change?

Now, we come to the more pressing issue of ice age, which, at least everyone has heard of. From past records it is known that ice ages last for about 90,000 years in which half of the planet gets covered with ice and there is a warm interglacial period of about 10,000 years in between. This period is called the Holocene. This is the era in which we are living in. The last ice age ended 12,000 years ago, so the next one is nigh overdue. It would most definitely we stupidity and brazenness to even think that such an event would not occur again. An indication for the onset of an ice age and the end of the Holocene is the concentration of a particular oxygen isotope in the soil. When the concentration reaches critical level, the ice age sets in. And according to present data, the concentration of that particular isotope is at unprecedented levels. The question begets: did man start all the previous ice ages?NO! We are but silent witnesses to the events of nature, in the end nature will dwarf us all and we will find whatever we are doing to nature as far as the climate is concerned, is miniscule and almost impertinent. Fact is, we are predicting melting of ice caps because of global warming based on past data which we have for the last 100 years or so. We do not have as much data for the last million years or so, so we tend to forego that possibility; and the rest of the world simply follows through with the hype. Attention generates even more attention, and the unhyped possibility gets neglected, like it didnt even exist.

Now coming to the global warming part: It may be true that CO2 and other such gases trap heat, thereby raising the temperature. But just look outside- Do you call this global warming? Where is this global warming bullshit when we are freezing within our woolens in our homes? Just keep your mind free of all the hullabaloo you have been hearing and ask yourself what's this global warming crap? Does it even exist? Temperatures were rising, albeit nominally every year, and then very much unexpectedly, they began to fall. 2007 was perhaps the coldest year in the last 10 years or so(at that time), and in January 2010 we have witnessed the sort of cold wave the likes of which perhaps we have not seen in our lifetime. And it is a similar story worldwide. There are reports of a record snowfall here, and lowest temperature in 60-70 years there. If the recorded temperature has broken a 70 year record, that would put us where we were in the 1930s per se the temperature. The South China Sea has frozen after 70-80 years, Chicago records a -17 , Toronto a -22 and Helsinki a -32, way below normal. IS This what you call global warming?

Tiny island nations like Tuvalu have been pushing their fight against global warming in meets like Copenhagen(read Flopenhagen), but did anyone care to measure the sea level, or just going with the hype and the accompanying fear? As it is , the water level has actually gone down by a little in the last 3-4 years! But we have a habit of going with the hype, perhaps because there are a large number of people who earn their livelihood through research done on this topic, having spent many years of their lives earning their doctorates. The scientists have now admitted their mistake when declaring that the glaciers would melt by 2035, so perhaps the global warming thing isn't having much effect. In fact, glaciers in Canada and Argentina have been recorded to advance in the last few years at a time when the collapse of Larsen B is hogging all the limelight.
So, is this global warming totally inconsequential? Maybe not. Let us turn back the clock by 10,000 years. In the previous ice age, there were large glaciers in Canada which advanced and receded with changes in climate, and when the ice age ended, a large lake now known as lake Agassiz was left behind. This lake was much larger than the current great lakes, larger than the Caspian sea, had more water than all present lakes combined and was spread upto South Dakota in the US. It used to drain periodically and the last drainage occurred about 10,000 years back when the remaining water in the lake rushed into the Atlantic because of breaking of some ice barrier. A very large volume of freshwater went into the sea within an year , and this changed the salinity of the ocean and the currents were totally shut off because of this. The ocean currents regulate the temperature of the land masses, keeping the Northern regions warm. With the currents switched off, there was nothing to keep Europe from freezing. The Thames used to freeze every year and things took about 200 years to get back to normal. This mini ice age is called the Younger Dryas, named after a flower found in the Tundra. Now lets say if the ice cover of Greenland is to melt within an year or so, the resulting influx of freshwater could cause a similar situation. This possibility has been chillingly portrayed in the movie The day after tomorrow in which Larsen B ice shelf collapses in Antarctica and as a consequence, the whole Northern hemisphere freezes in the time span of 3-4 days. Too dramatic and far-fetched? Consider this: In the Younger Dyras, Europe froze within months. But then again, that was not caused by any human activity like greenhouse gas emissions. The possibility of a mini ice age because of human activity is there, but it is very remote and miniscule.

An early postulated map of lake Agassiz, now believed to be an underestimation

Scene from the movie " The day after tomorrow(2004)"

Another scene showing the statue of liberty and two ships, frozen in the sea

The probability of an global warming or global cooling happening was pegged at 50:50 by some scientists a few years back, that is it could go either way in the near future. With the recent climate shifts in the last 2-3 years, it does appear that global cooling is happening, and it may well be here to stay. While global warming may depend on greenhouse gas emissions which is not fixed and may vary, the coming of an ice age is an inevitability for me as I believe in the theory of cycles. The only question is: when? Maybe in the next 1000 years, or in the next 100 years, or 10 years, or maybe an year. In the end, what standing does man have against the forces of nature? The current emissions of greenhouse gases may actually be warding off the onset of the inevitable.

And there is possibly one more player in the game, one which is too powerful to be ignored: the SUN. There is this cycle of solar flares and sunspots. In case the sunspots do not happen when they are supposed to, it is called solar minima. All of the staff wanted to go for strike(for the first time) but the strike probably wont be there because of the intimidating dictatorship that is ever pervading at the moment. The issues are not even listened to, they are suppressed forcefully.

I am foreseeing a domino effect which would ultimately lead to the college being de affiliated from the IP university or AICTE recognition being taken back if things continue in the same scheme of things. It only looks like a question of time.

ETERNAL DAMNATION...

Anon, Oct 5

HISTORY HAS BEEN CREATED, and i decline to comment whether it is right or wrong. All I can say is that this was the only road left to walk on. There wasnt an option in the matter. For the first time in 11 years since its inception, there is a strike on behalf on the staff and it does not matter if someone is a peon or a professor (there are hardly any professors in the college anyway). A strike in a non government institute is rather unheard of. This had been in the making since the last change in management that was when we were in the final year, and issues have been fomenting now for a few months that have now culminated in this. Now we have entered into a situation where looking back is not even an option. Its an all out WAR now; tomahawks, rocket launchers, AK-47s, flak cannons, snipers, shock rifles, pulse guns, rippers and all. It is high time that the system needed complete overhauling.

"every force you create has an echo.
Your own bad energy will be your undoing"

There should not be any need to explicitly specify who runs and controls the management people. The director was ousted like Tytler was ousted from the congress.

And why does everyone misinterpret my passages? I never said the management is on strike. The entire staff is on strike against the management, or rather the inordinate and unjustifiable exploitation and also the inhuman treatment that is meted out to the staff by the director general, even the ex-paltu kuttas.

Now it is one for all and all for one.

The situation is currently like either the whole staff would be fired or among other things, the 6th pay commission will be implemented. Either way, it is testimony to the zeitgeist which is a stormy petrel, a herald of totally dramatic change that is , and will continue to happen in the times to come.

2012 is around the corner.

Joban

, Oct 5

Anon,
Thanks for the update.
Its unfortunate that this is happening but i am sure you guys are trying to work for the betterment of the college too.
I heard we have an acting Director after that cheater of a director got fired. The rest of management is more of a thief than him.

As for the acting director, you know him: he is handling like he handled our placements.wo kuch nahi karega.
He is just a figurehead. He is made director only so that he wont interfere and the illegal activities can go on unabated.

The staff is afraid of the director general, but when the acting director tried to break the strike, it allowed people to vent their anger and shrug off their fear. Now lets see what happens when DG comes back.

When Hitler or Mussolini could not last, how could this dipsh** director last?

Rahul Nagpal, Oct 5

Dude

How r u .. You may agree or disagree with me , but it is impossible to disagree with logic.

" Life is nothing but a game of probability"

Every event has a certain probability of occuring, and this applies to the events in our life as well. Through our actions, we can alter these probabilities in our favor. we can increase the probability of an favourable event and reduce the probability of some unfavourable event. The altered probability will still never be 1 or 0, it has to be something in between only. So we are playing with the probability.

Say someone is doing engineering, then it is at least 90% probable that he will have a career in the IT industry. The probability increases if he goes with the flow, and can decrease if some unforeseen events occur or the person himself makes some conscious and planned efforts to deviate from the obvious. The change that occurs as a result may be for the better or the worse.
In case of planned efforts being present, the changes so brought forth are bound to be for the better. Then again, how many of us think beyond the obvious?

"Life is a journey in quest of the answers"

The first definition was rather unconventional, this line is more out of the book. The line may be heard of, but how many of us take life in this perspective, much less follow the path earmarked herewith? Doesnt anyone have sufficient curiosity or questioning attitude?

Do you have a defined goal or vision for your future to fuel the fire of curiosity and the thirst of knowledge which acts as a beacon of light while you are on the journey?

"Life is... Rajnikanth is on strike. The bowler bowls his stuff, confident of the victory. Rajani hits the ball in his signature style. While the ball is in the air, it splits into four pieces; and all four pieces go for sixes. Its 24 runs!!! The Tamil JumpingJacks win!!!

Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-657084472990401262009-05-11T03:31:00.000-07:002009-05-11T04:13:11.462-07:00Life vs death: The eternal struggle
Life and death can be seen as two entities that are constantly and perennially embroiled in a struggle, a tug of war. At the atomic level, we humans as an organism have to fight for our survival, just like millions of other different species. Even though the modern advancements in medical science have made possible extension of our life span beyond what was earlier thought possible, we live as long as we have a burning will of fire to live. We ensure our safety to live and that's what our efforts are in our fight on the side of life. We well know that for the other species, "survival of the fittest" is manifested on a physical level. For us, it is applicable on a mental and a financial level.

All being said about the fight between life and death, have we ever even thought which one is more important, or which one is more powerful? Given a choice, would you like to eliminate the entity called death altogether? Now, don't jump to conclusions straightaway, first read on...

For starters, if you observe the scene in a jungle, or even in or around the undergrowth in a local park, you can see fresh plants, saplings and leaves and blades sprouting out of just about everywhere. The dead plants and trees are very quickly replaced by the new ones. Does this not suggest that life is more powerful than death and always wins over death? Where there is death, there will be life and vice versa. Only the numbers game shifts depending on the situation, say score 100-10 for death in case of an epidemic or a catastrophe, but whatever the situation , ultimately it is life which regains its hold. Was Europe or India not repopulated after the disastrous plagues of biblical proportions in the midieval and the colonial eras? Do you not get to experience the highs of life after surviving the lows? So, I am definitely tempted to say that life is more powerful than death.

That being said, it is also true that life has no meaning without death. SAY WHAT? do we even need death, anywhere or anyplace? Is death actually welcome? The answer is that death is of course never welcome, but it plays its part in the eventual winning of life. Hard to digest? In a forest, whenever an old and large tree dies, it creates space for the development and flourishing of fresh plants and fresh life. That is the part that death plays. When an old player like Kumble retires, he makes way for the arrival of a new player like Ojha or Mishra. In our household, a member becomes old and passes on the responsibility of the family to us, and later we pass it on to our progeny.

The final point that I want to make is that death makes life an enjoyable and worthwhile. am I wrong in the head or something, is that what you are thinking? Consider this: If there was not any death, then we would live on forever. Then exactly what would we do in that long a lifespan? Because of death, our lives are limited, and that very thing makes our time and our moments precious. The happenings, the moments in life just whiz by , so it is entirely upto us to make our experiences memorable and the moments enjoyable, not only for ourselves but also for the world and our progeny. Time wated is a life wasted. We can only succour those special moments because they are limited. There is no point an infinite life without purpose. We have but one life, so better make it count to something.
Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-56615764862482341612009-04-06T06:27:00.000-07:002010-08-10T01:14:02.567-07:00How do you KILL an immortal???This one is really interesting matter, at least in theory.

I don't know what your reaction on reading this, but I will put him in a particle accelerator. The mass will be converted to energy by the equivalence of E=mc^2, and atom by atom, the matter will be destroyed irrevocably. Since nothing can replace the matter that has been lost forever, the person would eventually be erased from existence. And the energy can light up a city for an YEAR.Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-39446958371960346022009-03-23T05:35:00.000-07:002009-04-06T06:37:15.500-07:00An incident of the DG
For the unenlightened, I would tell that DG stands for director general in a certain college. This person is highly infamous for, among other factors, his nasty habit of snatching cellphones from the students whenever he sees a phone in the hand of a student.

As it so happened in September 2008, a first year student was covering his ground in the college while talking on his cellphone.

Hither came DG, the crack, wrinkle faced, sullen eyed, attitude in head, a thug, a liar,a fiend, an authoritarian, with no respect even for the God. Then, this was what transpired:

DG: Do you know who I am?

Student: NO!

Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-40245653077621210162009-03-15T16:24:00.000-07:002009-03-15T16:36:58.419-07:00Impossible is nothing: RAJNI KANTH style!!
For those not keyed in, I will let you know that Rajni Kanth is a superstar in South Indian cinema. He is well known for his incredulously superhero-like antics. His talent as a superstar can best be compared to that of Longshot of the X-men, whose speciality is blind, wild luck. I am quoting a story of Rajni Kanth and will follow it up with my comments:

Recently the father of physics(Sir Isaac Newton) made a visit to earth to watch a movie. He watched a few Tamil movies - including his latest release Sivaji - and had his head spinning. He was convinced that all his logics and laws in physics were just a huge pile of junk and apologised for everything he had done. In Rajanikanth's movies Newton was confused to such an extent that he went paranoid. Here are a few scenes:

1) Rajanikanth has a Brain Tumor which, according to the doctors can't be cured and his death is imminent. In one of the fights, our great Rajanikanth is shot in the head. To everybody's surprise, the bullet passes through his ears taking away the tumor along with it and he is cured. Long Live Rajanikanth!

2) In one of the movies, Rajanikanth is confronted with 4 gangsters.Rajani has a gun but unfortunately only one bullet. Guess, what he does....... He holds a knife in his hand and throws at one gangster..& shoots the bullet towards the knife. The knife cuts the bullet into 2 pieces and kills two gangsters. Then the bullet also splits into two and kills the other two gangsters!!

3) Rajanikanth is chased by a gangster. Rajani has a revolver but he got no bullets in it. Guess, what he does. Nah not even in your remotest imaginations. He waits for the gangster to shoot. As soon as the gangster shoots, Rajani opens the bullet compartment of his revolver and catches the bullet. Then, he closes the bullet compartment and fires his gun. Bang... And the gangster dies.... This was too much for our Newton to take and he was completely shaken and he decided to go back. But he happened to see a movie for one last time and thought that at least one movie will follow his theories of physics. The whole movies goes fine and Newton is happy that all in the world hasn't changed. Oops not so fast. The Climax finally arrives. Rajani gets to know that the villain is on the other side of a very high wall. So high that Rajanikanth can't jump even if he tries like one of those superman techniques that our heroes normally use. Rajani has to desperately kill the villain because its the climax.Newton dada is smiling since it is virtually impossible...........

Rajanikanth suddenly pulls two guns from his pocket (probably a backup). He throws one gun in the air and when the gun reached the height of the wall, he shoots at the trigger of the first gun in air, with his second gun. Now the first gun fires off and the villain is dead.

Newton commits suicide!!

The story quoted above may be a joke, but through this and various other means as well, I want to accentuate this point again and again: The human body is limited only by the human mind.

Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-3129274627594254402009-03-09T03:33:00.000-07:002009-12-13T20:44:03.682-08:00Some Excerpts from answer sheets of students
As a teacher, I have to check a lot of papers on a regular basis. When I started, I had some 420 students studying from me whose answer sheets I had to check. Apart from them, there were some students who had got back in their subject, and I had to check their paper as well. Now, any task is as interesting or as boring as we perceive or take it to be. Now, someone can easily say that paper checking is a very repetitive , monotonous and boring task and can even be done away with. But on the other hand, someone like me or especially some new teacher would say that the the best paper is done when you know nothing of the subject, and have to use up all your creativity. Sometimes, some answer may turn out to be very idiotic, even funny. Henceforth is a compilation of some interesting answers:

"The definition of perception is actually very hard to comprehend"
---organizational behaviour

(The deduction is that the student doesn't know the definition)

"Some wise gentleman has stated : cogito, ergo sum"
---organizational behaviour

(was that gentleman your relative?)

"A causal system is one in which the output comes after we give the input"
---digital signal processing

(no,no, what is the need to give input in case of a super intelligent student like you?)

"A causal system is one in which the output depends on the input"
---digital signal processing
(no comments)

"scanf() is used to scan whether the program is correct or not"
---introduction to programming

"getchar() is used to stop the output screen, and we can get back only after we press a key"
---introduction to programming

"break; statement is used to break the line or paragraph"

---introduction to programming

Full form of XP in Windows XP:

1)Extra premium

2)Extreme programming

3)Extreme performance

And so on...

Fact: This was from the introduction to computers paper(first year), and the destructively creative terms such as extra premium were given by third year students who the freshers asked for help since they themselves didn't know the answers. The correct answer is experience.

Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-11081054599167202452009-03-01T04:22:00.000-08:002009-03-03T04:32:37.124-08:00Can we DECIDE our... Destiny???
Now we come to the third and final dimension of information: The Future. This one is a real doozy: It requires meticulous work, we may have to work out unto more ends than just one; and at the same time we need precision: sort of like walking on a razor edge. This is difficult to explain as well.

Information gathering, related to the past and the present, is just the preliminary step unto this end. Now, I am breaking down the process into a series of steps:

1)Find out what will happen with certainty up to a certain point in the future, by logically extending our present and past data. Remember that we are finding out the future of only one aspect of our life, and that the point up to which the future is certain is important. That point may be an hour away or an year away.

2)Now comes the reason why deciding or even knowing the future is a real doozy:- ALTERNATE TIME LINES!! After the point of certainty, we reach the region of uncertainty. But even 'uncertainty' can be broken down into a finite number of 'certainties'.

3)Try to associate probabilities with the different events or certainties, subject to the condition that the sum of probabilities has to be one. Approximations would suffice as we are not doing some mathematical problem or studying QTBD (quantitative techniques for business decisions).

4)The probabilities will tell us how much we need to focus on each alternative. We may need to rule out certain possibilities, but that would require some doing. For we cannot say "this will happen" or "this will not happen". Our actions should cause the happening or not happening of a certain event. So basically we have to cause out the occurence of a low probability event or an unfavourable event. We have to be careful and thorough in our work and not leave anything to chance, so that things go according to plan.

5)Only one possibility should remain now as we have ruled out the lesser possibilities. We just have to work out so that our plans do not go to waste.

It is important to note that all our efforts should be well directed, and not just slogging out. Undirected efforts are most likely to be fruitless and that add to the frustration, and that can mean that we run out of steam at just the critical moment. Also, the efforts have to be tempered with belief, for the possibilities are only limited by our own mind.

The biggest advantage of this approach lies in the fact that while considering lesser or unfavourable possibilities to rule out, we are only considering the "bad" mishappenings. Since we are ruling out the bad luck, only the "positive" mishappenings or the good luck remains unaccounted for. And that is why, things will fall into place.

Making our own destiny may be a doozy, but yes, it is possible. The only undecided factor or unknowns that remains is the good luck.

Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1552647665012954056.post-68986868637616100452009-02-27T06:02:00.000-08:002009-03-01T08:54:18.384-08:00Deducing the past
Now having gained the present information, just how do we gain information of the past that we cannot get by conventional means? Ever thought about widening the horizon, forward and backward?

So if the first step is to use your senses, the next step would be to use your head. Your deduction and logic would take you where your information networks cannot. Theoretically, what you need to do is to ask yourself questions like why, how, what etc. i.e.relating to a particular situation; and then logically think out the answer to that question, i.e. what might be the logical possibility. If you cannot single out a cause or answer, then you need to keep in mind the different possibilities and if you can, then whittle it down to a single possibility or keep in mind the probability of the different possibilities. One question would essentially be followed by another question, and a chain would have to be established.

I think an example would do better:
Question:why did I get supple( failed in a test) in Organizational Behavior(a subject)?
Answer:Because the teacher gave me very low marks in the internal
Q: Why did the teacher give me low marks, and misbehave as well?
A:He must be having some problem of his own, most probably something playing badly on his mind.
Q:And what could that be?
A: His boss , the director general, would be paying him trinkets and giving him scant respect, despite of his credentials.
Q:But that's his problem with someone else. Why the heck would we students become targets?
A:The director general is in a high post. The teacher being his employee, cannot say anything to him. Ultimately the teacher can only possibly vent his anger on the students.

The deduction: Ok-kay. So I flunked in my subject because of the Director General.

This was an example of a chain of thoughts. We can also find answers to other questions. But the question has to come first.

Q:Why does the director general have this habit of snatching cellphones from students?
A:uske phone me koi balance nahi hoga (He must not be having balance in his cellphone)

Q:Why is the director general so stubborn , and frustrating to interact with? Why is he such a good for nothing headache?
A:uski biwi usse bat nahi karti hogi (Maybe his wife doesnt talk to him)

Note: I have put up an example that is quite specific. It is so chosen for a bit of humour, and also because it shows that I apply my logic at places other people never think about. Nevertheless, I would request the reader not to go totally into the specifics of the example, not to personalize it, but see things with a logical perspective. The questions and the answers have to logically follow, and a chain of thoughts will have to be formed. The logic in the given series of question and answers has to be understood and appreciated. The purpose of the post and the example is to help the reader develop a logical bent of mind so as to obtain information where the conventional sources fail.

Kulraj Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07470215624427545564noreply@blogger.com0
